GENE SIMMONS' Zipper Comes to the Shelves From: GeneSimmons.com Posted: November 27, 2007 Tom Waltz of IDW, writer of Children of the Grave, talks about working with Simmons to bring Zipper to life, how a military veteran ended up an IDW editor, and his future projects. Sequential Tart: How did GENE SIMMONS become involved in creating a comic property for IDW? Tom Waltz: I wasn't involved with the early talks with GENE SIMMONS regarding the Simmons Comics Group imprint, but my understanding is that IDW approached Gene about doing KISS comics, but KISS was already looking at Platinum Studios for that title. Instead, Gene mentioned he had plans to do his own imprint, comprised of his own non-KISS titles, and things moved forward from there. Again, this is my understanding. IDW Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall would probably be the best person to get specific details from regarding the deal. BRUCE KULICK demonstrating his Pedal Board http://www.livetojam.com/kulick.html Brushes With Fame From: Palm Beach Illustrated Posted: November 26, 2007 For the better part of three decades, the canvas PAUL STANLEY was best known for painting was his own face. As a front man for the legendary rock band KISS, Paul has been electrifying audiences in his signature spandex and platform boots since the band’s debut in the mid-1970s. These days, however, he has discovered another artistic passion, one that requires much more personal insight and much less personal makeup. His growing collection of original paintings, which began as a cathartic journey, has ended up resonating with art lovers, collectors and critics alike and earned him a whole new audience of devoted fans. PBI: What led you down this latest road of artistic expression? STANLEY: Divorce will jolt you in ways you may not expect. My best friend told me that I needed to paint. He seemed to feel I needed a release—and he was right. I went out and bought canvases and brushes and basically started on an emotional journey, a way to discover in myself things that were going on and put them on canvas. Kind of like stream-of-consciousness, but instead of words, using color and texture. TOMMY THAYER Makes Surprise Expo Visit From: KISSOnline Posted: November 24, 2007 TOMMY THAYER made a surprise visit to the Chicago KISS Fan Fest! The event opened at noon with the announcement that KISSONLINE would be raffling off a TOMMY THAYER autographed Rock the Nation tour book at 2pm. When the raffle was held, the winner, 12 year old Brandon Kisereu, came up on stage to get his prize and asked why it was not signed. We told him we'd take care of that - and then the side door opened and Tommy came onto the stage. The crowd went crazy! You could see the look of shock on people's faces - it was quite a moment! After signing Brandon's tour book, Tommy explained that he was in Chicago for Thanksgiving and wanted to stop by and thank the fans for all of their support! He then spent the next 45 minutes answering all kinds of questions from the crowd. Topics included ERIC CARR, Black 'n' Blue, a salute to the US Troops, the recent KISS trio concert, and of course many KISS questions! One fan told Tommy how much they appreciated him taking time out of visiting with relatives to spend some time with the fans - with that the crowd applauded again! Throughout this year nationwide, Wentworth Galleries has hosted 14 exhibitions of KISS front-man PAUL STANLEY's work. Mindy Tiberi, Wentworth Gallery Director in Schaumburg, Illinois, comments on Paul's Art & appearances: "PAUL STANLEY has a very strong fan base so his fans may start out wanting a piece of his art but they quickly realize that his art offers them a whole other dimension of his creativity and they start collecting. We also have many non-KISS fans who have no idea who PAUL STANLEY is and they see the work hanging at Wentworth Gallery and love it and buy it," said Tiberi when asked about PAUL STANLEY's show at Wentworth Gallery. She went on to say: "Paul is very devoted to all his fans. He came in right on time and stayed until he met with everyone who acquired one of his paintings or prints. I don't think he even took a break. He signed personal dedications for the art that was selected and posed for photos and everyone had a blast." [more] GENE SIMMONS Zipper #2 From: PaperbackReader.com Posted: November 16, 2007 Written by Tom Waltz Pencils by Casey Maloney Inks by Marc Rueda Colors by Dusty Yee Letters by Neil Uyetake Published by IDW, 22 pages for $3.99 I was more than psyched to get the advanced look at IDW’s Zipper #2, and so far this is a series that doesn’t disappoint. Zipper follows alien outlaw refugee Xeng Ral as he escapes the collective consciousness of his world for the wild urban individualism of Detriot. This second issue sees Xeng start to build personal relationships with some of Detriot’s less desirable residents while introducing a pair of subplots that are interesting and well-conceived if somewhat obvious given the story’s high-concept. The more I read of Tom Waltz’s writing, the more I like it. For one thing, Waltz has a good ear. His characters speak believable urban Detroit slang that’s neither over-wrought nor over-generalized. Each character has his own voice, which is an astonishing feat given the way most writers write inner-city slang. And then too, this is a book with a slow burn plot that has still found a way to be exciting in its early issues. We’re decidedly still in the first act of the book’s first arc, and yet we’ve already seen sex, violence, and violent sex… basically all the things you’d expect to see out of a comic inspired by the imagination of KISS front man GENE SIMMONS. I was hoping I could be a full counselor at this 10 Year Anniversary camp, but because of two shows for Grand Funk I thought I would miss attending. Three From GENE SIMMONS And IDW Publishing From: AintItCool.com Posted: November 8, 2007 DOMINATRIX #1-3 Writer: Sean Taylor Art: Flavio Hoffe & Esteve Polls I have to admit, these three issues were mindless fun. Dominique Stern is a dominatrix by trade, but when an especially creepy customer forces her to take a special "super soldier" pill, she becomes a super-heroine and enters a world of mercs, feds, and all-too-real thrills that pale in comparison to the fantasies that play out in her dungeon. Mr. Simmons is keeping the Bad Girl comic alive with this, a surprisingly sensitive comic. I was surprised that the book held out on the T&A until issue three, but the wait paid off in a fun sequence where the Dominatrix takes on a dozen mercs and distracts them with her ample assets. I went into this book with low expectations, so I wasn’t really disappointed with the mindlessness of it all. It’s a fun ride with some semi-fleshed out characters that like to show a lot of flesh and sometimes whip it into submission. Between the three issues two artists were used, which I found to be a bit annoying. This book would benefit from a little consistency in the art department, but is nevertheless entertaining.. Well, it looks like our honorary badwill ambassador C.C. Banana has struck again. As you may recall, the Banana spent last Halloween stalking GENE SIMMONS and PAUL STANLEY up and down the streets of New York City. This year the yellow freak has kept the KISS theme going by attending the annual Eddie Trunk Halloween Bash, featuring a performance by original KISS guitarist ACE FREHLEY! This was Ace's first concert in nearly six years, making the event quite the Halloween hotspot. As usual, C.C. Banana found a way of making his mark on the occasion... mainly by doing something he wasn't supposed to do. We'll let the Banana explain... Ghoulish Greetings, Metal Spooks! Everything went well and the response to the event and Ace's set has all been positive. The night started with comics Jim Norton, Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson joining me on stage to judge the costume contest, won by Ace "Peely". There was a slight delay in Ace getting on stage due to some minor technical issues, but he finally got on around 10PM. Ace's new band consists of bassist Anthony Esposito (Lynch Mob) and drummer/vocalist Scott Coogan (Brides Of Destruction). Rythmn guitar was handled by Derek. Ace was in great form, healthy, sober and playing and singing great. Many said this was one of the best solo performances they have ever seen from him and I agree. "Why in the hell are you so into KISS?" friends would invariably ask. The emphasis of course is on the 'why,' usually emphasized to enhance the complete and utter incredulity of what they must assume is some sort of mental condition on my part. I have to admit that, even though the reasons for my fanship seem completely obvious to me, my answers do very little to quell the confusion of those who ask. Full disclosure: I wasn't always an obsessed fan of the hottest band in the land. In fact KISS, particularly the blood-spitting GENE SIMMONS, used to give me horrible nightmares as a little boy. I remember a pretty blonde cousin of mine who asked me to go into her room and fetch a hairbrush for her. Upon turning the light on, I saw four black and white glossy 8X10 photos of Simmons, PAUL STANLEY, PETER CRISS, and ACE FREHLEY staring down at me from her wall. As embarrassing as this is to say now, they scared the living daylights out of me, enough to make me run out of the room and, much to my cousin's chagrin, forget her hair brush in the process. Seizing the opportunity to sufficiently torture me some more, she proceeded to play KISS Alive at such an ear-splitting volume that my bad dreams were now guaranteed to contain a soundtrack to accompany the kabuki-faced visuals. It wasn't until I picked up a copy of Howard the Duck Number 12 featuring the first ever appearance of KISS in a comic book that I started to really understand what all the fuss was about. Soon after that Howard the Duck stint, the Mighty Marvel Bullpen gave KISS their very own comic which, as a special bonus, contained some of their real blood in the ink. Finally, the band seemed more in line with what my eight year old mind could reasonably process. Once my eyes were opened and my mind was polluted, KISS suddenly seemed like they were everywhere. Their name was emblazoned across denim jackets, on belt buckles, lunchboxes, Halloween masks, and pretty much anything their logo would fit on. It took me awhile, but I was finally on-board with the rest of the world when it came to this unlikely cultural zeitgeist. I even sat in front of the television set in my "Superfriends" pajamas, filled with anticipation and Sugar Pops, ready to watch the 1978 Hanna-Barbara movie "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park". Sure, it was confusing and weird, and I had absolutely no idea why an allegedly brilliant scientist like Abner Devereaux would think he could rule the world with a bunch of amusement park robots. However, I think it was Charlie Sheen or maybe even PAUL STANLEY himself who said, "why look for meaning where this is none?" Plus, why busy yourself looking for a plot when you can just sit back and watch KISS fight hairy wolf-apes and their own evil robot clones? Pass the KISS Colorforms kit and clown-white makeup, because it was a KISS world, and I was just living in it! At this point in my journey to becoming a card-carrying member of the KISS Army, my hero worship was grounded squarely in the band’s cartoon image and had nothing to do with their music. In fact, it was not the promise of another new album that excited me as a kid. What excited me was the time we took our Mego KISS action figures in the backyard, took a penny, and decided to scrub off their face paint to see what these guys "looked like without their makeup". Much to our disappointment, they looked just like Barbie’s boyfriend Ken, albeit with longer hair. Eventually of course, the inevitable happened – KISS were temporarily replaced in my little heart by other pop-culture urges competing for my attention and the money I made from mowing lawns and shoveling driveways. Something had to change and KISS, always one step ahead of me, had something up their codpieces that no one expected. The place was packed and the line outside the building grew very fast with time. The stage was visible right away and featured walls of amplifiers (Marshall's and Frehley's - yes, they had "Frehley's" on them!) and the backdrop that showed a witch with Ace's makeup on a 'rocket'...althought take a good look on the rocket thought. The image on the backdrop was a typical Ace - spacey and funny The first segment was the costume contest hosted by 3 comedians and Ed Trunk, won by Metal Sludge's CC Banana dressed as "Ace Peeley".
